How to Tell If Your House
    Has Storm Damage

Georgia homeowner checklist — roof, windows, siding, water intrusion, and foundation. Know what to look for before you call your insurance company.

    Free Inspection — (404) 913-3030

    1. Roof — Check First

    • Missing, cracked, or curled shingles (check from the ground with binoculars)
    • Round dark spots on shingles and gutters — hail dents
    • Granule loss: dark bare patches; check gutters for granule buildup
    • Damaged ridge cap at the peak of the roof
    • Lifted or separated flashing around chimney, skylights, vents
    • Sagging or soft spots along the roofline — structural damage

Do NOT get on the roof yourself. A professional inspection is free.

    2. Windows & Doors

    • Cracked, broken, or pitted glass from hail impact
    • Bent or dented window frames and screens
    • Gaps between frame and wall — wind can shift windows out of plumb
    • Water stains on drywall around window sills
    • Doors that won't latch or close properly — structural racking from wind

    3. Siding & Exterior — Walk the Perimeter

    • Dents and cracks in vinyl, aluminum, or wood siding (hail = consistent round dents)
    • Chipped or missing paint on wood siding — exposes raw wood to moisture
    • Gaps, cracks, or separated seams between siding panels
    • Damaged soffit and fascia along the roofline edge
    • Brick or stone cracks — especially at corners and around openings

    4. Water Intrusion — The Silent Destroyer

    • Attic: wet insulation, water stains on rafters, daylight through roof deck
    • Ceilings: new brown rings or bubbling paint = active water above
    • Basement and crawl space: standing water, efflorescence, white salt deposits
    • Musty smell anywhere in the house — mold within 48 hours of intrusion

If you find any water intrusion, act within 24 hours. Mold starts in 48 hours.

    5. Foundation — After Heavy Rain or Flooding

    • New cracks in the foundation — horizontal cracks are most serious
    • New cracks above doors or windows — settling or shifting
    • Doors and windows that suddenly stick — structural movement
    • Water pooling against the foundation after the storm

What to Do When You Find Damage

    1

    Document Everything

Photograph all damage before touching anything. Date-stamped photos protect your insurance claim.
    2

    Prevent Further Damage

Tarps on the roof, towels at water entry points. Your policy requires 'reasonable mitigation' — this qualifies.
    3

    Don't Make Permanent Repairs Yet

Insurance adjusters need to see the original damage. Permanent repairs before the adjuster visits can reduce your payout.
    4

    Call Your Insurance Company

Open a claim promptly — Georgia policies have reporting deadlines. Have your policy number and photos ready.
