Dacula began as Chinquapin Grove, a settlement at the spot where Dacula Elementary School now stands. In 1891 it was renamed Hoke, after a Seaboard Air Line Railroad executive, and the name was changed again after the Post Office objected; the city incorporated in 1905. Today it covers about five square miles of eastern Gwinnett County along Winder Highway (U.S. 29 Business), had 6,882 residents at the 2020 Census, and shares its 30019 ZIP code with neighborhoods as far north as Hamilton Mill.
Lightning is the recurring cause in Dacula's storm record. In June 2007 the Gwinnett Daily Post reported lightning striking a two-story home on Daniel Park Run, burning the attic and leaving the rest of the house with moderate to heavy fire and smoke damage. Lightning set a home on Willow Park Drive on fire that August, set another home's attic on fire in July 2008, and caused extensive fire and smoke damage to a home on Mitford Lane in June 2010. In May 2018 the county emergency manager reported a house struck near Berry Hall Road and Marlborough Drive.
In December 2009 straight-line winds brought down nearly a dozen trees in a Dacula neighborhood on Alcovy River Drive. A tree fell on one home, and a large pine crushed a privacy fence. In July 2008 a tree blown onto a Dacula home broke its windows.
During the September 2009 floods, the Apalachee River near Dacula rose above its 8-foot flood stage. In September 2002, Old Peachtree Road and Old Fountain Road flooded, with water up to the foundation of one home. In November 2010 an EF2 tornado touched down near Holland Park Drive, about five miles northwest of Dacula.
The City of Dacula issues building permits only within its limits, and the 30019 ZIP code covers far more ground than the city. Confirm the parcel is inside Dacula before applying. Applications can be filed through the city's online portal, by email, or in person at City Hall, 442 Harbins Road, the road that also connects the city to the University Parkway bypass.
The city lists cosmetic changes and residential roof shingle replacement as examples of work that can be exempt from a permit. Decks, fences, additions, interior alterations and HVAC, electrical or plumbing work do need one, so a storm repair that goes past the shingles or a lightning fire that reaches the wiring will need a permit.
Dacula advises residents to consult their homeowners association before any exterior modification and notes that the city does not enforce HOA covenants. A city permit is not HOA approval for new siding, a new roof or a rebuilt deck.
The median Dacula home was built in 1999, per Census estimates for about 2,320 housing units, and about 32% went up between 2010 and 2019. Inspections are done by the city's third-party inspector, Precision Planning, Inc., and where a Gwinnett Fire Marshal certificate of occupancy applies it comes before the city's own.
