Sugar Hill was chartered by the General Assembly and incorporated as the Town of Sugar Hill on March 24, 1939, and renamed a city in 1975. Before that it sat on the route from the railroad at Buford to Cumming; local tradition says it was named for a spilled sugar shipment. The city covers about 11.4 square miles of northern Gwinnett at an elevation of 1,079 feet, between Buford to the northeast and Suwanee to the southwest and close to Lake Lanier. Its 25,076 residents at the 2020 Census made it Gwinnett's fourth-largest city. The city itself owns and runs the natural gas utility, which in 2001 drew a petition from more than 1,600 residents over gas prices.
In February 2005 quarter-size hail fell in Sugar Hill while stones up to golf-ball size fell in Buford and Suwanee. Golf-ball hail was observed in the Sugar Hill and Lake Lanier/Buford Dam areas in April 2009, and in April 2011 amateur radio operators reported hail up to half-dollar and ping-pong size from Norcross to Sugar Hill and Buford. Quarter-size hail fell near Drake Street and Swimming Pool Road in April 2025.
The USGS gage on Level Creek at Suwanee Dam Road crested at 13 feet, four feet above flood stage, with water reaching the bridge, while Richland Creek at Suwanee Dam Road crested at 10.5 feet. Yards and woods along both creeks flooded.
Lightning set a house roof on fire in August 2000, and the county emergency manager reported homes struck on Reynolds Place and Blue Cedar Drive in the summer of 2018. A large pine snapped and damaged a porch on River Island Circle in August 2020, a tree came down onto a structure on Suwanee Mill Drive in June 2022, and others fell at Kimberly Beth Place and Emerald Parkway in December 2024. Two trees fell along Hillcrest Drive in January 2020, one onto a vehicle; part of a large tree snapped near Suwanee Dam Road and Price Drive that June; and a tree came down near Buford Drive and Gravel Springs Road in February 2024.
In February 2020 the public reported 3 inches of snow about a mile north-northwest of Sugar Hill.
The City of Sugar Hill Natural Gas Utility lists (770) 271-2137 for gas leaks and maintenance and (770) 945-6716 for billing and customer service, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 5039 West Broad Street. Its safety page says to look for blowing dirt, bubbling water or dead patches of plants, listen for hissing near lines, meters or appliances, and if you smell the rotten-egg odor to leave and notify 911 or the city. Do not use light switches or anything that could spark.
Georgia State Route 20 is Sugar Hill's main road, running 11 miles northwest to Cumming and 12 miles south to Lawrenceville. U.S. 23 runs along the city's southern edge toward Suwanee and Duluth, and I-985 is reached at the Buford border.
The 2020–2024 American Community Survey finds utility gas heating about 64% of Sugar Hill homes and electricity about 33%. Where a fire, a flooded basement or a fallen tree has reached a gas meter, appliance or line, call the city's gas leak line before anyone restores power or relights a pilot.
Sugar Hill Building Services handles permits and inspections inside city limits, at (770) 945-6734 or building@cityofsugarhill.com. Inspections are requested with the online form or at inspections@cityofsugarhill.com with the permit number; the city says requests received by 2 p.m. are scheduled for the next business day if the information is accurate and the day's inspection workload has not been reached.
The Building Services page explains that Georgia's State Licensing Board for Residential and General Contractors, created in 2004, licenses contractors; Residential-Basic covers detached one- and two-family homes and townhouses up to three stories. A deck rebuilt under the city's Prescriptive Deck Details must follow those details for single-span, single-level decks, with a copy on site for every inspection. Georgia law requires a call to Georgia 811 at least 48 hours before digging new footings.
Census estimates count about 8,980 housing units with a median year built of 2003; about 25% were built in the 1990s, 28% in the 2000s and 25% in the 2010s. About 80% are detached houses, about 5% are mobile homes, and about 80% of occupied homes are owner-occupied, with a median of 6.9 rooms.
