Fairburn, named after a village in England, grew up on the Atlanta and West Point Railroad after Campbellton refused to let the line through. It became the seat of Campbell County in 1871 and joined Fulton County at the start of 1932, when bankrupt Campbell County was absorbed. Interstate 85 runs through the city toward downtown Atlanta 20 miles northeast, and State Route 74 heads south toward Peachtree City. The 2020 Census counted 16,483 residents. Fairburn's federal storm record includes tornadoes, hail and flooding, and the Census survey shows most of its houses were built after 2000.
A National Weather Service team traced an EF1 tornado with winds near 95 mph that touched down near Creekside High School, damaging goal posts and bleachers, then uprooted large pines around the Durham Lakes Country Club. Along White Bird Way, Tall Deer Drive and Small Elk Court several homes had significant damage from falling trees before the tornado lifted short of West Campbellton Street.
An EF2 tornado with winds up to 120 mph and a path as wide as 315 yards touched down between Fairburn and Campbellton. More than 50 homes in the Chestnut Ridge subdivision had visible damage and at least half of them significant damage; along Jumpers Trace, two-story homes lost large sections of roof and upstairs exterior wall. On that date an amateur radio operator reported golf-ball hail at the Senoia Road exit on I-85.
A short EF0 tornado with winds near 75 mph crossed from near Camp Creek Parkway over Campbellton Road to Fairburn Road in the Ben Hill community, snapping and uprooting trees.
A survey by the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City confirmed straight-line wind damage about four miles north of Fairburn, where downed trees struck several structures along South Fulton Parkway, and a home in the 4800 block of Trigger Lane was heavily damaged. Hail fell for 10 to 15 minutes in the Fairburn area during the same storm, until Georgia Highway 92 was covered with hail.
The public reported golf-ball hail west of Fairburn in July 2013 and ping-pong-size hail across the city in March 2023.
Repeated thunderstorms flooded several streets in the Union City and Fairburn areas, including Georgia Highway 92 and East Campbellton Street in downtown Fairburn, and the public reported nearly five inches of rain in Fairburn.
In September 2007 the Georgia Department of Transportation reported lightning striking a transformer on a pole beside I-85 near Fairburn; the line fell across the interstate and all lanes closed while it was repaired.
A tree fell across Georgia 92 near Valleybrook Drive in April 2022. In January 2023 the worst damage around Fairburn and Union City was a tree down through a home on Thaxton Road SW near Wolf Creek Circle. Trees came down at Rivertown Road and Tell Road twice in August 2023, and a large tree fell beside Georgia 74 just north of Milam Road in April 2025.

Fairburn covers about 17.1 square miles, most of it land. The 2020 Census counted 6,798 housing units, 8.9% of them vacant, with a rental vacancy rate of 11.7%. Owners of empty or for-sale homes should look them over after each storm.
The 2020–2024 American Community Survey puts the median year built at 2004 for about 6,480 housing units. Around 41% went up in the 2000s, 21% in the 2010s and 5% since 2020, so roughly 68% are less than 26 years old. Gather the builder's documents and any roof or window warranty before the adjuster's visit.
About two-thirds of units are detached single-family houses and about 64% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. The median home has 6.4 rooms and a median owner-estimated value near $271,800.
Electricity heats about 51% of Fairburn homes, utility gas about 45% and bottled gas or propane about 3%. A tree that falls across a propane line or a tank needs the gas supplier before anyone else.
Downtown streets flooded in the July 2008 storms. FEMA's Map Service Center shows the mapped flood zone for an address, and standard homeowners policies treat outside floodwater differently from a burst pipe.
Fairburn subdivisions see attic leaks turn to ceiling collapses—our workflow covers extraction, dehumidification, and full drywall/paint restoration.
